As you many of you may have heard, Erika of Ivory Hut recently lost her home in a tragic fire. If you go to her site you will see this message:

Our house burned down last night. Barely made it out alive. Homeless, possession-less. But we’re all safe & together. Still richly blessed.

You can’t help but feel such sadness by the random tragedy of such an event, then two sentences later and in just three words, you feel such admiration for her strength and optimism.

You can read Erika’s moving post written the day after the fire by clicking here.

I can’t even begin to imagine what I would do if I was faced with such a tragedy, but I am so glad that the blogging community is stepping up to make a difference. Alice of Savory Sweet Life and Maggy of Three Many Cooks have created a blog, Friends of Erika for all of us to rally around Erika and her family.

Regardless if you are a blog reader or a blog writer, I encourage you to help Erika in any way you can. Whether you contribute $1, $5, $25 or more, any amount donated will help alleviate the financial burden for Erika’s family in the upcoming months and will be greatly appreciated. Remember…every dollar helps.

There are many times in life when you can choose to jump in and help, or stand aside and watch others do it. I’m hoping everyone will choose the latter. I am a true believer that a community is only as good as what its members put into it. That being said, I am proud to say I love belonging to a blogging community that spans miles upon miles of geographic separation but will come together with such strength and compassion to help someone they may or may not personally know. It is my hope that you will help spread the word about Erika and her family through your blog, email, social media, etc because together, we can make a difference.

My motto: Blogging brings us together. Inspiration and compassion keeps us together.

    Jamie –

Thank you for the forwarded email this week. I learned about the fire via Twitter the morning after it happened, and donated on the site that Alice and Maggy set up earlier in the week.

Thank you for spreading the word.

My heart is so full right now. I wish I could donate more for Erika and her family. We all never know when we’ll need help from others. Blessing to her and her family, thanks Jamie for letting us know. I don’t know Erika personally, but sending lots of love and hugs and prayers. What an ordeal for the family. Grateful that no one was lost or hurt.

Thank you for posting this. I went to the donation website, and just the explanation of what happened brought tears to my eyes. I realized how often I don’t give “strangers” another thought. It’s so easy to concentrate on my own “problems” and brush off the troubles of others. I do not know Erika personally, but reading the detailed account of what happened and how it has affected her family really touched me. I’m proud to say that I donated.
