This week’s recipe for Dorie’s Devil’s Food White Out cake was chosen by Stephanie of Confessions of a City Eater. I made this recipe back in September, and while we liked the cake itself, the frosting was not really our favorite. This time I decided to do a mini version and use a tried and true recipe for buttercream frosting. The frosting that Dorie’s recipe calls for is a marshmallow-y consistency, I figured this would be perfect, since I love me some marshmallows! However, I personally thought it lacked flavor, so I knew when this recipe came into rotation I would definitely be changing that component. We preferred this cake with with buttercream frosting…but we also love buttercream, so our opinion on the original frosting may be slightly skewed.

If you want the recipe for this cake check Stephanie’s blog and head over to the Tuesdays with Dorie blogroll see more versions of this dessert.

Beautiful job! I really liked the marshmallow frosting, just because it was so light, but I bet it was just as tasty with a sturdier buttercream.

I love the way you decorated — it looks very professional. Mine was a mess, but at least it tasted good!

Looks good! Too bad about the frosting (I love marshmallow-y stuff, too)though buttercream is always a winner in my book.
