I was contacted over the weekend to participate in the online fundraiser, Operation Layla. Many of you may have come across information about Layla via the website OperationLayla.org or via Facebook and Twitter (#OperationLayla).

Although I do not personally know Layla, after reading about her story, I felt a connection with her immediately and knew I had to help support her and the fundraiser. I am so incredibly thankful that I can use My Baking Addiction as a means of reaching out to help spread information than can impact the lives of others.

A Bit About Layla

One month after her 30th birthday, Layla was diagnosed with early stage cervical cancer (1A Adenocarcinoma). She was extraordinarily lucky that it was caught early, and had a simple surgery to remove the cancerous cells. Layla, has overcome cervical cancer, but is currently in need of surgery and other medical care to deal with Endometriosis that is causing her severe pain. Layla was let go from her job due to her illness and her husband’s insurance will not cover the cost of the surgery or care, as they consider it a pre-existing condition. In just 48 hours, Operation Layla was able to raise enough money to cover the surgery and they are now working towards covering post-op visits and other necessary medical care.
Layla’s bio and more specific information can be found on the Operation Layla website, OperationLayla.org.

Giving Back

I was asked to supply a baked good for an online auction; however, I instead decided to provide Operation Layla with a box full of my favorite cupcake making essentials. The winning bidder will receive an array of items such as a cupcake pan along with my favorite liners, piping tips, bags, and sprinkles. The items will be valued at over $50 and will be shipped directly from My Baking Addiction.

Bake Sale Information

The bake sale is an online auction through the website Operation Layla. It will go live Wednesday (3/16/11) morning and will close at 11pm that night. Over 25 bakers have already signed up to donate a wide variety of goods, including vegan and gluten-free options. All bids will begin at $15 and will be organized through Jessica at operationbakesale@gmail.com. Donations must be made within 24 hours of winning the auction via our PayPal account. After the auction, I will receive the winning bidder’s address and will ship the items.
