Love Yourself: {Giveaway}

If you happened to catch this post earlier today, this giveaway may make a little bit of sense to you. If you haven’t read it, you’ll need to head over and read it as the main entry for this giveaway.

This is not a typical giveaway because this is not a typical mixer. I have teamed up with the lovely people at KitchenAid to offer my readers an Artisan® Series Cook for the Cure® Pink Stand Mixer.

Most of you already know of my long standing love affair with my KitchenAid Mixer. Truly it’s the third wheel in my relationship, the ying to my yang. As I mentioned in the earlier post, now is the time to spread the love, and this Valentine’s Day, have a love affair with yourself! Take the time to appreciate yourself, appreciate the other women in your life, and in the process, win a fantastic prize. This cause is so close to my heart that I had to jump at the chance to participate in a giveaway that allows not only me, but the people participating, to pay it forward.

The rules of this giveaway are also a little different, so you’ll need to read carefully! You see, my main goal for this giveaway is to reach out to you on Valentine’s Day and remind you to love yourself by completing a breast self-examination or to schedule your yearly mammogram. If I can remind just one of you how important early detection is, my story was well worth telling. A special thanks to KitchenAid for helping me spread the word!

How do you win?

{Main Entry-Required}

1. Read this post on My Baking Addiction. I know it’s long, but I promise it won’t take longer than 3.5 minutes to read. THEN remind someone you care about to give themselves a self exam or schedule their yearly mammogram. THEN come back to THIS post and tell me who you told. {example} “I emailed my friend Brittani and reminded her to give herself a self-examination.” or, “I reminded my wife, Molly.” Remind 3 ladies, get 3 entries. Please remind as many people as you can, but limit yourself to ONLY 3 entries for this component. This is a good faith entry, please follow through!

I reminded my mom to do a self breast exam today. My grandmother died of breast cancer so it’s something that SHOULD always be in our mind, but is not. Your story is a great reminder of how important it truly is, so thank you for sharing!

I called my mom, and reminded her to get checked. My mom has been the primary care giver for my dad who was diagnosed with lung cancer in May, and even after treatments has been becoming sicker, and can no longer have treatments. My mom has put all her appointments off since. So I called her and made her make an appointment, and am going to go care for my dad so she can go.

I reminded my friend Allie to give herself a self exam. She had skin cancer at 19 and had a portion of her foot removed where the tumor was. She is very concious of her health but I never want to see her fight that battle again. Be sure to self examine yourself too!!

I reminded my mom to self examine herself regularly. After losing my dad was to early I want to be sure my mom is around as long as possible. We committed to each other that we will remind each other on the 14th of every month to self examine. Be sure to do the same and Happy Heart Day!!!

I text my mother in law.. She worries me so much.. She’s over 50+ and still hasn’t had a mammogram. Her reason? “I come from healthy stock”. Hopefully she finally does go.. She just got her first colonoscopy, so that’s a huge step!

I had my first mammogram at age 35 — then the ulrasound–same thing as you, ultra petrified, but mine was “Normal”. It is so important to get that test and I told my sister.

I will give myself my own breast examinations. This is something my doctors always tell me to do, yet I “forget”, until after reading your story. It is too common today, but I am in a constant state of “it won’t happen to me.” You are only 31 and it happened to you!! Thank you again for sharing!

I reminded my mom. This story is very inspiring. I had something similar happen except they haven’t removed the lump since it is non-cancerous and I have had it since I was like 19. I am now 33. I discovered it the same way, my breast was achy in a spot…I felt it and well there was a lump. I get it checked regularly.

I reminded my mom to continue to do breast self exams and to go ahead and get another mammogram. She found a lumop inher breastwhen she was 44 and had to have a it removed thank God it was only a fibrous lump. Thanks for sharing you story…so many times we as moms and caretakers forget to take care of ourselves.

my mother and grandmother are both survivors of breast cancer, thus it’s something i take quite seriously. i am constantly reminding those loved ones around me to get checkups, schedule mammograms and do the basic self exam. but today, i reminded a special few, with a little more urgency, one being my sister, because like me, she’s been told she has “cycstic” breasts, which means a lot of lumps that USUALLY mean nothing… but one day, they might not be just nothing.

This is great!!! I actually had my first mammo 1 1/2 wks ago – I got a call back and was told they found a spot – I was terrified … they needed to do another – come to find out it was nothing, but it really wakes you up when something like that is presented to you. My mom has found two spots and had them removed, both ended up being nothing – thank goodness. This is such a terrible thing – everyone needs to check…you never know. My hubbys aunt and grandma both had cancer – it’s so sad. I always encourage people to check themselves. Such a awesome thing you are doing!! What a great give-away!!!!!

Sadly, tomorrow I will be going to the funeral of a good friend who lost her brave battle with breast cancer. Your story touched me because of it’s honesty and the fact that you listened to your body and your intuition and followed through. I pray that your checkups will continue to be good.

I actually had a mammogram last Thursday, the first in over 5 years. Afterwards I stopped by and reminded my coworkers from my last job to go in and do the same. And get a Pap smear too!

I know your fear…haven’t had to go as far as the lump removal…but frequently have to have repeat “second and third looks.” Thanks for sharing-I know it was difficult. Thanks for sharing your story. My aunt just had to have a mastectomy right before Christmas and she found the lump via a self-exam so it really is an amazing gift to remind someone about. She’s doing great!

Such a heartfelt story!! Upon turning age 40 and knowing we had to start with mammograms, my 2 besties decided we would to it together every summer as a ritual! We go have mammo done, then we have a girls day out (which typically inclues chocolate and drinks), have pedis done and just some good old fasion girl time!! After reading your post, I reminded my friends and we are set for mammograms and girls day out without children on June 24th!! Thanks again for such an inspiring story~!

I would really like to add something to this discussion. Please do not limit yourselves to getting checked for breast cancer. Warmer months are ahead for a lot of us and that means more sun exposure. Please check yourself and have a dermatologist look at anything suspicious. I had some odd little spots on my temple. My regular doctor didn’t think it was anything but sent me to a dermatologist anyway. It was skin cancer. I have had to go back four times to have it removed from that spot along with a couple on my back. Please be careful and get checked out completely. Cancer is bad and we all need to help each other to protect ourselves and stay healthy!

I absolutely read your post. Twice. I am moved by your openness and thank you for being willing to share your experience. My mother in law just finished her last round of chemo this month so the words ” breast cancer” have even come out of the moths of my little ones. Because of this I am especially aware of the fear and questioning that goes along with any diagnosis. I have now encouraged my closest and even casual acquaintances to take action. Thank you for also encouraging your readers to do the same.
I re-reminded my closest friend April to do an exam because of this post!

I sent an email to my three sisters – Ariana, Chelsea and Jade. Last week we ran in the breast cancer marathon relay race in Jacksonville, 26.2 with Donna. This experience was one I’ll never forget…running across the finish line with my siblings (our brother too) was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I had a mammo about two weeks ago. I had a scare about six years ago and was very grateful for a clean bill from a great follow up MD. I did the follow up scans and have been fine. My co-worker died last year from breast cancer so no one has to remind me. I now work at a new restaurant. I reminded all of the female staff and married male staff to have themselves and their wives do self exams and mammos. One of my sous chefs also wears an I heart boobies wristbands.
I also am friends with you and kitchen aid and follow you both on twitter.
I hope I win. I just blew my kitchen aid from over use.

I reminded my mother to do a BSE once a month. Her first mammogram was a bad experience and because our family history, she decided that because she is low-risk (up until recently) that she isn’t getting them anymore. Unfortunately her aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a radical mastectomy earlier this month, so she may change her mind.

I am reminding my sister Amanda. Since our mom passed of pancreatic cancer on Valentine’s Day 1999 and my father is a colon cancer survivor, we have learned to take control of our own health. Breast cancer CAN be caught in time, unlike my mother’s kind of cancer in which there is no early screening. I have a dear friend also battling breast cancer now. I just had my Mammogram last week and personally reminded my girl friends Kelly, Lisa, and Mary about the importance of checking yourself at least once a month and having a Mammogram at least once a year if over 50 and every two years if between 35 and 49 years of age. I’ve lost a number of very dear friends to Cancer. We must start to take better care of ourselves with the self exams so that it is caught as early as possible. Men too. I have already donated $100 to Komen this year so far and will be walking the Komen 3 Day in Atlanta in September. Unfortunately, Breast Cancer is a household subject that’s common. My great grandmother, grandmother, mother and sister have all had it. All on the same side. Poop does roll down hill. 5 years ago I elected to take control of my healthcare as well and convinced my insurance and doctors to allow me to have bilateral prophylactic mastectomy! It was a struggle but all agreed and I have lowered my BC risk by 80%. I’m glad you are well and thank you for the bottom of my heart for spreading the word!

I have just made 2 donations to the American Cancer Society. One is for Breast Cancer in honor of my cousins Barb and Debbie and friend Dorothy who lost their battles with breast cancer and my friend Jody who is a breast cancer survivor. The other is for Colorectal Cancer in honor of my Aunt Lee who lost her battle with Colon cancer. I also made a donation to the American Heart Association in honor of my Dad who lost his battle with Heart disease. Thank you for the reminder of how important it is to contribute to these worthwhile causes.

I reminded my mom to get her mammogram. Breast cancer has always been so scary to me. I don’t have anyone close to me that has dealt with it but it is still such a big fear of mine. Thanks so much for sharing your story. I am happy to hear that yours has turned out to be a good ending!
