This week’s recipe for Dorie’s Devil’s Food White Out cake was chosen by Stephanie of Confessions of a City Eater. I made this recipe back in September, and while we liked the cake itself, the frosting was not really our favorite. This time I decided to do a mini version and use a tried and true recipe for buttercream frosting. The frosting that Dorie’s recipe calls for is a marshmallow-y consistency, I figured this would be perfect, since I love me some marshmallows! However, I personally thought it lacked flavor, so I knew when this recipe came into rotation I would definitely be changing that component. We preferred this cake with with buttercream frosting…but we also love buttercream, so our opinion on the original frosting may be slightly skewed.

If you want the recipe for this cake check Stephanie’s blog and head over to the Tuesdays with Dorie blogroll see more versions of this dessert.

Oh wow – beautiful, Jamie!! I’m with you on the marshmallow frosting – I thought it lacked flavor too. And a bit too sweet. But I was glad to have tried it- this was my first experience with a frosting like that. Yours really looks amazing!

Your perfectly “crumbed” cake looks beautiful. I don’t know how you got such even coverage. That’s impressive. That was the messy part. huh? Anyway, whats not to love about a good buttercream. A great variation for “playing around.” I’m keeping that under my hat for another try at the Cover Cake.
Yours is beautiful. Thanks for visiting and leaving comments.

What a beautiful cake! It does seem like everyone loves the cake, but not so much the frosting. I will have to try a buttercream with the cake also. Your photography is just gorgeous!
