Cooler weather means one thing around here: It’s soup season! Grab your favorite dutch oven and get ready to dive into some of my favorite cozy fall soup recipes. Whether you’re making them for dinner or as a starter for a holiday meal, these recipes will warm you up from the inside out.
Anyone who knows me knows that I can’t wait for fall for two big reasons: all of the pumpkin recipes and all of the soups.
Seriously, I love soup so, so much. I could eat soup every day and be totally happy.
And yeah, I’ve been known to make soup during the warmer months. But once the weather cools off in the fall, it’s game on. It’s just me, my soup pot, and a whole lot of deliciousness.
I’ve pulled together 15 of my coziest fall soup recipes for you today. Most of these are filling enough to serve on their own for dinner, while others can also stand in as a first course for a dinner party or holiday meal.
I’m also a big believer in sharing the foods you love, so these recipes are great to make for friends or neighbors who could use a meal.
Getting your kitchen ready for fall soup season
Every fall, I stock up on some of my favorite soup-making essential ingredients. These include:
- Stocks and broths: Most of my favorite fall soup recipes use chicken stock or broth, but a handful use beef stock or can be made vegetarian with vegetable stock. I like to pick up boxes of stock at Costco to last me a while.
- Canned vegetables and beans: Keeping an assortment of canned tomatoes and tomato sauce, canned beans, and canned corn in the pantry makes it easy to throw together a hearty soup at the last minute.
- Aromatics: Whenever I’m at the store, I grab some onion, garlic, carrots, and celery. These aromatic veggies serve as the base for many of my recipes, giving the soups great depth of flavor.
- Shredded chicken: Many soup recipes call for cooked and shredded chicken. I’ll often cook and shred several chicken breasts to store in the freezer, or buy and shred a few rotisserie chickens at a time. Store the chicken in 1-cup portions in the freezer so it’s easy to grab when you need it.
You’ll also want a good heavy-bottomed soup pot. I like using a 6-quart dutch oven for most stovetop recipes.
For slow cooker recipes, I recommend using a 6-quart Crockpot.
Soups are perfect for making ahead and freezing. You can use Souper Cubes to freeze individual portions, or freeze larger portions in deli containers. These containers are also great for storing leftovers in the refrigerator.
Serving suggestions
Most of the recipes below are hearty enough to stand on their own as your dinner. You can always serve them with bisquick biscuits, garlic knots, or Texas Roadhouse rolls for dipping.
Recipes like butternut squash soup and mushroom soup make great starters for your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners.
You also can’t go wrong with a soup/salad/sandwich combination! Roasted beet feta salad, prosciutto sandwiches, or pimento cheese sandwiches are all perfect for pairing with your favorite soup.
You can also keep things simple by making a classic green salad and topping it with homemade blue cheese dressing, ranch dressing, or poppy seed dressing.
